A Celebration of Dance A Benefit for the Dance Art Museum of the Americas October 30, 2004 In a recent report, art and culture ranked ahead of gambling, movies, and professional sports with New Mexicans. This was proven when the Dance Art Museum of the Americas gathered an impressive number of dancers from New Mexico to perform a full evening of dance from Ballet to Modern, Traditional, Folkloric, and Ethnic, in a successful fund-raiser. A dazzling reminder of dance's diverse venues, the roster was a litany of dance personalities including Travis Jarrell (Middle Eastern), Pearl Potts (Contemporary), Susan Baker Dillingham (Ballet), Maya Ward (Comedy), Noriko Ferry (Japanese), Allegra Lillard (Broadway), Catalina Rios (Flamenco), and Elise Gent (African). This cornucopia of choreographers and dancers share the museum's goal of spreading dance appreciation through education and joy. In addition to the performance, there was a photography exhibit and book signing of photojournalist Rose Eichenbaum's new book Masters of Movement: Portraits of America's Great Choreographers. Ms. Eichenbaum reveals a collection of photographic portraits and vignettes featuring legends such as Gregory Hines, David Parsons, Mark Morris, Paul Taylor, and others. This beautifully crafted cloth bound book, signed by the author, is available (for a short time) through the Dance Arts Museum of the Americas for $39.95 (includes free shippping); it will be one of the most valuable books in your dance library.
